Cabler plans 'Closer' relationship with actress
Kyra Sedgwick has signed on to star as the lead character in the TNT drama pilot “The Closer.”
Produced by The Shephard/Robin Co. in association with Warner Bros. TV, skein is one of two hourlong pilots TNT greenlit to production last month (Daily Variety, July 28).
Cabler plans to send one of the projects — the other is “The Line” from DreamWorks TV and Sony Pictures TV — into series production by early next year for a summer 2005 premiere.
Should “The Closer” move forward, it would rep the first original series on the network since “Witchblade,” which went off the air in 2002.
Procedural revolves around Atlanta-born police detective Brenda Jean Johnson (Sedgwick), who heads up an elite division of the LAPD that handles high-profile homicides. “The Closer” reunites TNT with the actress, who co-starred in the cabler’s Emmy-winning telepic “Door to Door” opposite William H. Macy.
“The character of Brenda breaks a lot of boundaries, both on the job and in her personal life,” said Michael Wright, TNT senior VP of original programming. “She’s a combination of genteel Southern charm and steely, no-holds-barred grit. We really needed someone with Kyra’s skills to bring Brenda to life.”
Michael Robin is directing the pilot from a script by James Duff (“The D.A.,” “The Agency”). Duff, Robin and Greer Shephard are exec producers.
Sedgwick next stars in the indie feature “The Woodsman” with husband Kevin Bacon, and Showtime pic “Cavedweller,” which she also developed and produced. Thesp last appeared in the HBO movie “Something the Lord Made.”
