Still photographer
Elliott Stephen Marks, one of Hollywood’s most respected still photographers, passed away suddenly July 9. He was 61.
Bornin Toronto, Marks moved to Los Angeles with his parents and brother when he was 8. The self-educated Marks chronicled the motion picture industry from his unique perspective as an artist over 25 years.
Elliot discovered photography as a hobby while working as a top cosmetologist and it soon became his passion. He began as a wildlife photographer, and his trademark was a technique that brought a distinctive quality of motion to his work.
Over the course of his career, he photographed literally every major actor in Hollywood. His film assignments include “Rocky,” “History of the World, Part I,” “The Horse Whisperer” and the last three Star Trek pictures. His work on “Pirates of the Caribbean” is currently being featured.
Work of his has been exhibited internationally, and his images have been used in the advertising campaigns for most major studios. His work was featured in a show at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and at the G. Ray Hawkins Gallery.
In 1996, Elliott was inducted as a founding member of the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers. He was the recipient of the Society of Operating Cameraman’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He had just completed photo essay book “Perfect Mates,” taken of couples married 50 years or more, which he was readying for publication.
He is survived by his wife Deborah Klar, a son and a brother.
